2017 Valedictorian Address

Grad 2017

Valedictorian Address

by Sarah Haugen

Good afternoon family and friends and Happy Mother’s Day! Thank you all for coming to this very special weekend of ours. For years we have worked hard and the day has finally arrived. Thank you for your support, encouragement, and love you have given us. Without you all, we couldn’t have made it to this day and we thank God that you have been a part of our lives.

Before I acknowledge our graduates, I’d like to acknowledge our 2016-2017 LCBI family.  Firstly, our staff. I strongly feel God’s presence here because of you all. You were called to this place to serve and you have been a blessing to all of us. Your devotion to your job, to us, and most of all to God is an example I hope to match one day. We have grown, matured, and we have become better people because we came here. Thank you.

Grade Elevens and Tens, I am sorry to say we are leaving you behind. The memories we have shared are so very precious and the jokes… let’s just say I hope I forget them. As a student body we have shared an entire year of laughing, loving, and serving our Lord and I can’t thank you all enough for being here today. I pray that as we go on our new journeys, you will fill our school with even more love and laughter than you did before. We leave here as a whole people knowing we are loved by God and his servants, the community of LCBI. Also, I thank you in advance for all the cleanup you are going to do on Monday morning. It is much appreciated.

So… this is it. We’ve been at this gig for about thirteen years. We’ve learned basic math and how to tie our shoes. We learned why Canada became a nation and if you run for political office wearing a wig and your principal’s grad dress, you may win. Our lives have always had school in our focus. Now the focus is a little blurred. Some of us feel the call to university, others hear the call to tech schools. And some of us haven’t heard a call yet and are really hoping the reception gets better sometime soon. This is a scary step we face. However the Bible urges us not to worry. Matthew 6: 26 says, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” The jump between teenager and adult can feel terrifying but we can take comfort in knowing that God is there every step of the way.

Now I’d like the audience to look at the beautiful and handsome young people to my left. They are in fact a bunch of goofballs. They are the ones who decided it would be a good idea to ask for (and subsequently receive) slushies and ice cream sandwiches on two separate occasions. This is also the class that jumps out from under the desk to scare Mrs. Engen and reads the lyrics to “Fresh Prince of Bel-air” for a Grade 11 English assignment. This is also the class that I love. These are some of the strongest and hardest working people I have met. They are funny, unique, and most of all they are truly, as Mr. Hove likes to say, daughters and sons of LCBI.

Class of 2017, you are amazing. I am honoured to stand up here and represent you. God has made you into his masterpiece and it is beautiful. My prayer is that we will look back on our time here and value the blessing it is truly. You are godly people and I am lucky to be a part of your class. And, without any doubt, I know that you will continue to be an example of Christ’s love wherever you may go.

In honour of Mother’s Day, I would like to close with a saying my mother would say to me as I left for school. So, as we leave school for our last time, I say to the LCBI Class of 2017:

God bless you, God loves you, and so do I.

Sarah
